There is no doubt that many companies are going green and eco friendly techniques are being developed to do business. Excessive paper consumption and increasing traffic emission due to the transportation of invoices is a growing concern. It is expected that these concerns form an important part of companies corporate social responsibility (CSR). As of now, organizations are more concerned about their invoices getting greener. However, inception of 'greener and cleaner' environment is beginning to show in. The promotion through ecological friendly system is gaining acceptance pre dominantly with the help of online invoicing.
One of the most important introspection that makes me believe that online invoicing will lead the green movement is its compatibility. Online invoicing integrates with almost every business. One reason why manual invoices enjoy greater acceptance is because they are still popular among the receivers and are not ready to accept electronic invoices, even though the benefits of online invoicing largely profit the recipient. Online invoicing automates and fastens the payment cycle which benefits both the receiver and the sender. On the other hand, incorporating electronic invoicing does not require any major system changes and is relatively inexpensive. In this respect, business-to-business and business-to-consumer invoicing could be improved considerably, and companies should promptly request, or even demand, e-invoices from their suppliers.
In fact, the situation has been made dicey by those who started using online invoicing in its early stage but in inappropriate manner. During the early incorporation of online invoices the lack of smooth co-operation and co-ordination between various players has affected companies' interest in its incorporation. However, through a regulated body and common forum many organizations have developed their own e-invoicing mechanism.
If experts are to be believed, then online invoicing can become a driving force only when the demand for e-invoices increases. The recipients' behaviour is the most important and significant factor. This point is highlighted earlier in the article as well where I mentioned that sales invoices are not converted into an electric invoice due to lack of acceptance from the recipient.
